This mother elephant was frantically trying to free her 11-month old baby from being struck in a well. She was trying to dig her way to the injured calf, but nothing she was doing was working. This heartbreaking scene was captured by onlookers who rushed to the scene.
Tragically, the mother elephant actually made matters worse with her continued effort to dig the baby out. Every time she dug away at the mud, more and more dirt and mud was thrown on top of the baby. She was almost smothered in the process. When people arrived on the scene, it was obvious that the baby had been there all night long, as the mother was exhausted.
The full video captures the intensity of the scene perfectly. Villagers in the Chatra district of India came rushing to the scene after they heard the elephants' cries of distress. Thankfully, the baby was eventually freed and everything was okay.
