It all started about 8 years ago when hotel owners started to realize that people were stealing the actual signs that are on the doors, with "420" written on it. That led them to remove the signs altogether.

Room No. 420 is not the only room that people think have special meaning. They also avoid room number 237, ever since the movie "The Shining" came out.

Another reason was the fact that people would often trash rooms with these numbers on them. Pot smokers would somehow think that it was okay to trash the rooms completely, smoking weed in the rooms and leaving roaches everywhere.

Hotel owners have tried to get around this by doing all kinds of crazy things. This hotel owner changed room 420 to "room 419+1."
